Clyde Butcher’s compelling black and white photographs chronicle some of America’s most beautiful and complex ecosystems. The exquisite beauty and depth of his works draws the viewer into a relationship with nature. For more than thirty years he has been preserving the untouched areas of the landscape on film, and for twenty of those years he has concentrated on Florida. Clyde’s images are captured with an 8″x10″, 11″x14″, or 12″x20″ view camera. The large-format camera allows him to express in elaborate detail the textures that distinguish the beauty of the landscape.

Clyde has recently been honored by the state of Florida with the highest award that can be given to a private citizen: The Artists Hall of Fame Award for his photographic excellence. He was also chosen as Person of the Week on the ABC Peter Jennings Evening News program, and has recived the Heartland Community Service Award from the state of Florida, for his work in educating the people of Florida about the beauty of their state. he has received the Conservation Colleague Award from The Nature Conservancy, and the Sierra Clud distinguished Clyde with the Ansel Adams Conservation Award, given to a photographer who shows excellence in photography and has contributed to the public awareness of the environment.

Clyde’s photography has been exhibited in museums in the United States and Europe. Public Boradcasting has completed an award-winning 1/d-hour documentary on Clyde, Visions of Florida. A second video, Big Cypress Preserve: Jewel of the Everglades, featuring Clyde is also an award-winning video.

A large selection of Clyde’s photography can be seen at either of his galleries: Venice Gallery & Studio in Venice, Florida; or Big Cypress Gallery, located in the the Everglades on Tamiami Trail in the Big Cypress national Preserve, on thirteen acres in the middle of more than a million acres of National Preserve.
